The 1.49 are the thickest standard index lenses made for prescriptions SPH: 0.00~-8.00 CYL: 0~-4.00. They were the first choice instead of choosing glass lenses. Because of their properties the eyeglass frames must be a full rim frame, reducing and preventing the lenses from cracking.
